Abstract

The production of hairtail fish (Trichiurus spp) can be enhanced through planned, effective, and efficient fishing strategies. These strategies include identifying seasonal fishing patterns and optimal fishing locations, often referred to as the Fishing Season Index (FSI). FSI serves as a metric or indicator in fishing activities to determine the availability or abundance of a specific fish species at a particular time of the year, enabling fishers to better prepare ahead of the fishing season. This study aims to evaluate the fishing season and potential fishing locations for hairtail fish using gillnets. The research was conducted from July to December 2019 using a descriptive approach. Seasonal patterns were analyzed using the percentage average method, and potential fishing locations were identified through marine surveys with gillnet vessels. The results indicated that the most productive fishing season, with a Fishing Season Index (FSI) exceeding 100%, occurred between July and November. Moderate productivity, with FSI ranging from 50–99%, was observed in February-March and May-June, while low productivity periods, with FSI below 50%, occurred in April-May. Potential fishing locations in Cilacap, particularly in Teluk Penyu, were divided into four segments: Jetis Waters, Menganti Waters, Pandanaran Waters, and Segara Anakan Waters.
